According
to historical records, the first dwelling on the allotment
was constructed prior to 1902. The first recorded
owners were Dr H G Bennetts. It is assumed that the
building would have been a surgery for Dr Bennetts.
By 1906 the building had passed to Mrs Elsie J Bennetts
(mother or wife of Dr H G Bennetts) and was occupied
by Dr G C Harper. Elsie Bennetts moved to Sydney by
1908 and married to become Mrs Talbot.
She sold the property to Amy Esther
Harvey the wife of Robert Harvey in 1917. The Harvey’s
had retired from farming at Combaning after losing
3 sons in WW1 and settled in Temora. In 1921 the Harvey’s
moved to Newcastle and sold the property to Gertrude
Lucy Bradley, wife of John A Bradley the publisher
of the local newspaper, The Temora Independent. This
would have been very convenient as the property is
situated directly behind the newspaper office. Mrs
Bradley still owned the property in 1946. John A Bradley
was the grandfather of current publisher Arthur Bradley. |
We
purchased the property from Les & Nola Breust
in July 2005 after they had lived there for over 20
years. Thus began a long and arduous restoration.
The back portion of the building was removed and rebuilt
with materials recycled from the original structure.
Other materials were sourced from a farmhouse on the
property of Myalla which were donated by Barry &
Helen Harper of Ariah Park.
The property has been restored in
the Federation style of the original building. External
weatherboards, polished timber floors, timber walls
panelling, pressed metal ceilings & walls, tiled
bathrooms, marble fireplaces and wide low timber verandas.
It provides a stunning example of a bygone era with
all the modern day comforts.
